Topic of the week: Women inventors
🎯 EXPLORE
In recognition of International Women's Day on March 8th, we highlight the significant yet evolving role of women in innovation and patent creation worldwide. Drawing from the latest WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) report on IP Indicators 2023.
In this section of "Participation of women inventors in published PCT applications" the data reveals a gradual but positive shift towards gender inclusivity in the realm of intellectual property.
In 2022, women made up 17.1% of all inventors listed in PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) applications, a notable increase from 10.6% in 2008. This rise is observed globally, with the percentage of applications naming at least one woman inventor growing from 20.6% in 2008 to 34.7% in 2022.
The representation of women inventors varies by country, with China and Türkiye leading among the top 20 origins of PCT applications, each having nearly a quarter of inventors being women. In contrast, Austria and Japan had about one-tenth of inventors as women.
The life sciences sectors—biotechnology, food chemistry, and pharmaceuticals—saw higher proportions of women inventors, around 30%. Overall, the presence of women in inventing roles increased across 29 of the 35 technology fields from 2021 to 2022.
Congratulations to all women on International Women's Day, March 8th – a day to celebrate the remarkable achievements and ongoing contributions of women around the globe!
